Why You Should Choose Environmentally Friendly Cookware!

Climate change is a serious concern for the future of our planet, having already resulted in devastating effects on our environment. Glaciers are shrinking, sea levels are rising, plant and animal species are becoming extinct, the consequences of climate change are irreversible and are among the greatest challenges facing humanity.

The greenhouse effect is the natural warming of the earth generated when gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun that would otherwise escape into space. Whilst this is necessary to keep the world at a comfortable temperature, human contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is increasing significantly, causing dangerous levels of heat in the climate system.  The growing size of landfills are of particular concern, emitting methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In 2019, Australia produced a staggering 20.5 million tonnes of waste that went straight into landfill, directly contributing to climate change (ABS, 2020).

Recycling is an important measure we can use to reduce the impact waste has on our environment. When we recycle, materials are processed into new products, reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfills, and therefore the quantity of methane being emitted into our atmosphere. Other benefits that recycling offer in aid to fighting climate change include:

Conserving Natural Resources

Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials, minimising the damaging effects of extraction processes such as mining, quarrying, and logging which create significant air and water pollution.

Protecting our Ecosystem

By conserving our natural resources, less disruption is caused to our wildlife’s natural habitat.  Reducing waste in land fill lessens the likelihood of discarded materials being blown into waterways and coastlines, minimising the impact on our marine life.

Saving Energy

Producing products from recycled materials requires less energy than producing them form new, raw materials. For example, producing new aluminium from recycled products such as cookware, uses 95% less energy than making it from scratch (FOTE, 2018).
