What is Coeliac Disease

Coeliac Disease is a chronic digestive and immune disorder triggered by eating foods that contain gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley). When people with celiac disease eat gluten, their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to additional health problems.

Coeliac disease can develop at any age after people start eating foods or medicines that contain gluten. The disease resides in genetically predisposed people and is estimated to affect up to 1 in 100 people.

Some lifestyle changes that those with Coeliac disease can implement include:

Firstly, a gluten-free diet is imperative because even the slightest amount of gluten will trigger an immune reaction.

Becoming an expert at reading ingredients lists on packaged food before purchasing or consuming.

Understanding where around your area to shop for food and what exactly to look for when seeking out gluten-free options.

Luckily, today more than ever before, access and options for gluten-free individuals are vast and full of variety.

You no longer need to only shop at specialty stores, your local supermarket is sure to have options to cater for all dietary needs, you may just need to know where to look.
